Why Draymond Green Called A’ja Wilson His Favourite WNBA Player?

Golden State Warriors veteran Draymond Green did not think twice when asked who his favourite players in the WNBA are.

In the most recent episode of the Post Moves podcast on April 29, Green joined co-hosts Candace Parker and Aliyah Boston to discuss his top players to watch in the W.

And the first name on the 2017 DPOY’s list was none other than four-time MVP A’ja Wilson. “I love watching Aja, the tenacity that she plays with, the skill level is insane,” Green said.

A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces have dominated in recent seasons, winning three championships since 2022.

The 29-year-old has anchored the franchise since the Aces selected her first overall from South Carolina in 2018.

After the latest CBA, the Aces rewarded her with a record three-year, $5 million contract, the highest in the league alongside Aliyah Boston.

“A’ja is truly one of one, who has led this franchise to where it is today,” Aces president and general manager Nikki Fargas said in a statement, following Wilson’s renewal.

Wilson led the league last season with 23.4 points and 2.3 blocked shots per game. Alongside the MVP award, Wilson also shared the DPOY award with Alanna Smith and won the AP Female Athlete of the Year honours.

Apart from the 29-year-old, Green also mentioned the likes of Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart as his most-watched players, but did not forget to give co-host and 2024 No.1 overall pick Aliyah Boston props over her growth with the Indiana Fever.

Green’s support for Wilson isn’t new, as he previously highlighted her impact on the league’s growth over Caitlin Clark.

Draymond Green Believed A’ja Wilson to be More Marketable than Caitlin Clark

Two years ago, the WNBA was on course for the biggest boom period in its existence, thanks to the rise of rookie Caitlin Clark from Iowa.

Meanwhile, A’ja Wilson remained the reigning champion and had already established herself as the league’s best player.

As the WNBA was putting all its eggs in CC’s basket as the league’s next big star, Green wasn’t so quick to agree with the sentiment.

In an episode of “The Draymond Green Show”, he addressed that fans and the media should be showing more love to her because her current play on the court will lead to being one of the “greatest players to grace the WNBA” one day.

“I ain’t saying Caitlin Clark is the best thing since sliced bread. Quite frankly, if you want my opinion, that’s A’ja Wilson,” Green asserted.

“I think y’all got a gold mine in the WNBA sitting right there, marketable as anybody in A’Ja Wilson, and haven’t figured out how to make it go. Ain’t A’ja fault. A’ja got a lot about her that is as marketable as can be,” Green added.

Green’s intuition was correct, as fast forward two years, A’ja Wilson has cemented her legacy as the greatest player to step on the hardwood in the W with four MVPs, and the league now markets her at the same level as Caitlin Clark.

So, who is your undisputed choice to be the face of the WNBA between A’ja Wilson’s experience and GOAT status and Caitlin Clark’s exciting potential and hype?
